Search Engine Studio - Website Search Engine for your website

Overview Almost all websites have some sort of search engine that allows you to search the contents of the website. Some work better than others. Some are free (usually with unwanted links or adverts) and others cost a fortune.

This page gives an insight into DTSystems's powerful search engine technology and how you can make best use of it. All of our website is indexed and so you should be able to find any information you are looking for very quickly if it exists. The search engine contains no pop-up or third party advertising material of any description and does not track you or your computer. The code behind the search facility is a very powerful binary script running on our own web server and is provided by: Search Engine Studio.

Is it easy to setup?

Yes and no! It is very easy to index your own website using the site crawler. Make sure you select the right type of server operating System and file type. We use a binary search on a Linux based server. The server usually has a /cgi-bin directory that you need to use for the file upload area. CRITICALLY, upload ALL search files except the header and footer (both .htm) as binary files and alter the file permissions (CHMOD) to 755. If you don't, you get the dreaded (and especially helpful) 500 server error message. Tracking down errors can be a nightmare as the software vendor and server host all talk in a strange double encrypted shorthand gibberish designed to cause terminal confusion. Indeed some webhosts do not allow .cgi scripts to run at all. Find a test .cgi script online, upload to your server and see if it runs. If it does, you stand a fighting chance of getting your search engine to run too. Update the header and footer files to include your website layout and feel, change the results font and colours and your clients are good to go.

How to Use

Phrase Search

You can search for whole phrases, that is by embedding an expression in quote characters, e.g. "search engine", only the documents that contain the word 'search' followed by 'engine' will be listed in the results.

Advanced Boolean Search (using AND, OR, NOT and parentheses)

Create advanced boolean search queries using AND, OR, NOT keywords and parentheses. For example: (speaker and not woofer) or (loop and metal).

Wildcard Search

You can enter a search query containing wildcards (e.g. search for all words starting with, ending with, or containing a given letter sequence) by using the * and ? characters. For example, *tribut? which will match words like: contribute, attribute, tribute.

Combined Searches

You can combine all the above to search for complex phrases:
Suppose you were looking for the effects of line loss on dialup volume ie when listening a long way from the exchange:
Search for ("dialup volume" and loss)

Detailed Feature List

wide range of targets
The program can create a highly optimized binary CGI script for Unix / Windows servers (compatible with most web servers and lightning fast even when indexing hundreds of thousands of documents), a PHP script (compatible with virtually all web servers but slower when a very large number of documents is indexed), or an ActiveX-based version for offline search (equally fast as the CGI version, suited for CD-ROM / DVD distributions).

indexes static & dynamic HTML pages (e.g. PHP, ASP, CGI, JSP, ColdFusion), PDF documents, MS Office documents
With Search Engine Studio you can index static & dynamic HTML pages (e.g. PHP, ASP, JSP, ColdFusion, CGI scripts), Abobe Acrobat (PDF) documents, MS Office Documents (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint).

4 unique ways of scanning a web site: HTTP crawler / FTP / local disk / XML file
Search Engine Studio can scan and index documents using a web crawler (HTTP scan), local / network disk scan, FTP server scan and XML scan. All scanning methods are very flexible allowing you to exclude certain areas of a website or even include password-protected areas. You can also mix the indexing methods, e.g. have the program find the documents to be indexed by reading files from a local disk and then rescan them using the HTTP protocol (very useful for dynamic HTML pages).

no information about the program on search pages
The search engines created with Search Engine Studio display absolutely no information about the program, no links, ads or any other code that you don't include yourself.

create unlimited number of search engines with a single license
You can create as many search engines, for as many web sites as you like, when you purchase a single license. Please note that the license is subject to other restrictions listed in the order section.

high performance
The CGI and ActiveX versions of the search engine are extremely well optimized. The search takes a fraction of a section even with a huge number of documents indexed. Please check the samples section to give it a try.

easy to get started
The program comes with an assistant which guides you through all the steps of creating a search engine and showing you how to use the program, thus making search engine creation an incredibly easy task. You no longer need to be an advanced web developer to add a search engine to your web site!

easy integration with existing web site
Search Engine Studio supports integration of the search engine with an existing web site (e.g. based on a DreamWeaver template) -- even if your web site is frame-based, you can visually click on the frames where specific search engine parts will be displayed. The results page also optionally uses a template page specified by you so that it can look like other pages of your website (e.g. with a navigation bar, company logo or copyright notice).

fully flexible formatting of search results
The search engine results can be freely formatted. Using the result formatting builder you can decide what each search result will contain (e.g. date, size, title, description or content preview) and exactly how the results will be displayed (you can set fonts, colors, links as well as e.g. put parts of results into different table cells). In fact, you can decide about EVERY detail of the formatting, including conditional inclusion of HTML code (e.g. images) based on document type or date. You can also easily add a NEW image to documents created recently. The supported items you can insert into the result template are: document date, description, title, filename, size, type, URL, content preview, result number, or custom HTML code. Click on the samples section to see a few samples of result formatting.

automatic updates of databases
You can have Search Engine Studio automatically update the search databases periodically (e.g. once per hour, day or week) so that the search results always reflect the latest changes in the website.

content preview of search results
The result listings can show the exact location of searched words (marked in bold) within the document's contents together with the surrounding words so the user sees the exact context in which the searched words appear in the documents. Please note that you can also display a document description (parsed from the meta or title tag).

phrase search
The visitors can search for whole phrases, that is by embedding an expression in quote characters, e.g. "search engine", only the documents that contain the word 'engine' following 'search' will be listed in the results.

advanced boolean search (using AND, OR, NOT and parentheses)
The visitors can create advanced boolean search queries using AND, OR, NOT keywords and parentheses. For example: (word1 and not word2) or (word3 and word4).

wildcard search
Your visitors can enter search query containing wildcards (e.g. the user can search for all words starting with, ending with, or containing a given letter sequence) by using the * and ? characters. For example, *tribut? which will match words like: contribute, attribute, tribute.

search box appearance and options can be set using a built-in tool
With a built-in tool (search box builder) you can fully customize the appearance of the search box using either a pre-defined set of search box options (e.g. date or document type selector, result count per page selector) or by adding custom HTML code.

result filtering based on documents' creation date or type
You can allow the visitor to filter out documents from the results based on document's creation date, document type, or the section of the web site in which the result is found.

foreign language support
Using built-in language tools, all messages displayed to the user can be translated to another language. Search Engine Studio also offers support for non-standard characters, e.g. so that searching for 'über' and 'ueber' will return the same results.
